OUYA Game

Posted in Just something to say with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 14, 2014 by getbent57

Ouya.jpgThe other night was thinking to myself, I should try and make a game for the OUYA.  Thought it would be a fun project to work on in my spare time.  Started to look into the process.  Could not find any step by step how-to’s.  Did a bunch of searching and reading and came up with a plan.  Found a get help post showing how to set up all the development kit stuff > here.   Did all these steps.  It seemed to work but still have know idea what does or how you use it.  Next was time to find a game engine.  There is a bunch, you can see that list > here.  After looking at them all.  Decided on Game Maker.  Because it looked the one of the easier ones to use with lots of help online.  They have a free version to try.

Got that all download and installed.  Watched a tutorial and made a simple box move in each direction with pressing the arrows keys.  Then I wanted to see if I could get that onto the OUYA and use its controller.  Well that is were I ran into trouble.  Could not figure out how to do that.  Looked into get code to map the buttons.  But that was very confusing.  Ended up getting very frustrated.  So I gave up.  It shouldn’t be that hard to do.  Just wish there was a step by step process.

Ouya.jpgYes, back again talking about the OUYA.  Now that I have one.  Thinking about trying to make a game for it.  It might be fun to give it a go.  Would like to make a simple one, nothing special.  Not to sure what is all involved to make one.  There will be some programing for sure.  Would need to look up a lot of help for that.  Since I am not a programmer.  But do understand some of it.  Just don’t know to put that all together.  I know the SDK or that they are calling it ODK is free to download and use.  As I am typing this (July 24, 2013) there is a new version out, 1.0.6.  You can download that > here.   They all so have a help section under their Developers Portal > here.   When I have some free time going to look into this idea a lot more.  Will be back with updates.

Got My OUYA

Ouya.jpgGot my OUYA in the mail today (Monday July 22, 2013).  Didn’t think it would get here until Wednesday or Friday.  Once I got it out of the box it was very easy to set up.  Just plug the HDMI cable and power cable in.  The HDMI cable is super short.  Think I will have to buy a longer one once I find were I want keep it in TV set up.  Once that’s done you turn it on and pair the control.  All that is every easy.  Have been reading that some people have had trouble with connecting to Wi-Fi.  Had no trouble at all with that.  Once connected to the internet it does a firmware update.  Which doesn’t take along at all.  Next you have to make your user account.  This is the only problem I ran into so far.  Made my account then the internet connection dropped.  But that was an easy fix.  Use deleted the the connection and set that up again.  It worked no problem after that.   Then next thing is to set up your credit card.  I didn’t want to input my info at this point.  Found a work around that lets you use a test numbers.  You can read about that > here.  When I am read to buy some games I will go back and put in my real info.

Have all so heard some bad things about the controller.  I haven’t had any trouble yet.  It works fine.  Will take some getting used to since I use a PS3 controller.  Doesn’t have the same build build quality as a Sony or Microsoft but it is fine.

Plan to try all kinds of games.  Try pairing a PS3 controller.  Then some of the emulators.  I will be back with some updates when I try these and more games out.

Have tired a few games so far.  They are easy to download.  You can download them while still looking the the game lists.  The games I tied so far are,

Shadowgun:  This is a pretty good game.  It controls good.  Easy to play

Critical Missions: SWAT: It is very confusing to set up:  The game is a like a Counter Strike clone

Highway Rally:  This is pretty bad.  I couldn’t it it to work.

King of the Hill:  It is like a Trials HD clone built in flash.  Kind of bad.

Ice Rage: This is fun.  A two on two hockey game.  This is one  I might buy.  Would be fun to pay with friends

Ouya.jpgHave ordered myself an OUYA.  Waiting for it to come in the mail.  Should be here some time next week.  In the mean time found a nice web forum.  It is the unofficial OUYA Forums.  Took a look around at a few post and there is some good stuff here.  Seen one talking about how to pair/use a PS3 or XBox 360 with the OUYA.  There was another one talking about side loading.  This allows you to use apps that are not on it.  Then found a great one on how to  bypass the credit car requirement > here.   It gives you a list of fake numbers for testing purposes.  Can’t buy anything it is there for testing and if you don’t want to use the credit card right way.  There is all so a bunch of posts on emulators.  All these things will come in handy when I get mine.  Will be back with an update once I get it.

Ordered An OUYA

Posted in Just something to say with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 12, 2013 by getbent57

Ouya.jpgOrdered myself an OUYA  game console today, July 12, 2013.  Have been on the fences for a while now about buying one.  Heard good and bad about it.  It has been sold out at Amazon.ca two days after it come out back on June 25, 2013.  Just about every day since then I would go back to its page to see if they were back in stock and to see what people were saying.  To my surprise they were back in stock.  So I jumped on that.  Didn’t even thing about it, just ordered one.   Did have a birthday a week or so ago and still didn’t buy myself any thing.   So this can be my birthday present to myself.  Since today is Friday it will not ship until Monday.  I choose the free shipping option so they are saying the estimated time of arrival is between July 23 to 26.  That not too bad.  Have ordered lots of things from Amazon and they have showed my much early then then the estimated time of arrival.  Will be back with another update when I get it.

Ouya.jpgOnce again talking about the OUYA.  It is now for sale.  It was released June 25, 2013.  The only place you can buy it in Canada (that I know of) is off of Amazon.ca.  Still thinking about buy one.  Do have a birthday coming up so thinking that this is what I should by myself.  The only thing is Amazon is “temporarily out of stock”.   This is two days have it came out.  So my guess there are a lot of people what one.  So I will look back on my birthday and see if they are back in stock.  In the mean time I will have some look at reviews.  Know there is some bad press out there on it.  Because some of the early Kickstarter backers still haven’t received theirs.  They were told they would get them before they went on sale to the masses.  So they are going on the internet and bad mouth it.  Just have look past that stuff to find a real reviews.

Ouya.jpgYes, yet again talking about the OUYA.  Because I am still thinking about betting one.  Might buy myself one for my birthday.   You will be able to buy one starting June 25, 2013.  After watching this newest review > here or below I can see how some of the games look and play.  If you head over to the OUYA website you can see a list of the games that are available to download. Looked at this list a week or so ago.  It has gotten bigger.  One of the things I was surprised to see is there are bunch of game emulators on there.  So if you download the emulator and “find” some roms you can play the old games.  Seen emulators for Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Gameboy/colour, Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64 and NEO GEO.  Not sure if they will be there forever.  Can see lawyers having some thing to say.  However it is pretty cool.  If I do decided to get one I will be back with pictures and updates.

OUYA Release Pushed Back

Posted in Just something to say with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 9, 2013 by getbent57

Ouya.jpgBack in March it was announced that the OUYA would be released June 4, 2013.  Well there is some good news bad news about the OUYA today.  The good new first over at there > blog it says they have raised $15 million in funding from new investors.  That is good because the will be able to make more OUYA’s and what not.  But here is the bad news the release date has been pushed back to June 25, 2013.  It is only three weeks.  They all so say that this will not affect early backers.

Still on the fence about getting one.  Sure the OUYA itself will be great.  Just not sure about the games yet.  Know there will be lots of small phone/tablet like games.  Some quick pick up and play ones.  That would be fine for a little bit of time.  I would like to see some games with more to them.  If there was a well made COD clone or a full size action RPG I can see the OUYA taking off.

OUYA June 4 2013

Ouya.jpgIt has been announced today (March 29, 2013) that the OUYA will be in stores to buy June 4, 2013.  The people that backed the Kickstarter campaign have or will be receiving theirs soon.  Every interested in getting one but want to wait until here are some reviews out.  Did a search on YouTube not much here yet but sure with time there will be all kinds.  Did find a first look at the retail version by CNET > here or below.  They all so have a nice article with lots more info.  You can check that out > here.   One of the cool things about it is you can use it as a development kit.  Make your game then load the game on it and try it out.  That might be some thing fun to try out.  The controller uses two AA batteries.  What is different about this than other controllers is.  The face plates on the controller come off and the batteries go on each side of the handles.

The biggest thing is all the games are free to try.  Which is  great since I think most of the game on there will be pretty crappy.  That is why I am in wait and seen mode.  There will be some good and bad games.  Sure there will be lots of phone/tablets games.  They are fine but not what I am looking for.  Looking for some games with some depth.  Time will tell.  Will be back at some point talking again about the OUYA.

OUYA

Ouya.jpgTalking about the OUYA once again.  It is about four months way from being in store.  It is set to launch June 2013.  No actual day in June has been set yet.  The lady that created this new console, Julie Uhrman  has been making some media rounds.  This past week she was at the SXSW (South by Southwest Festival) and a few other place.  The hype is building.  Still interested in getting one.  But still going to wait and see what people have to say then the come out.  Like the idea all the games well be free to try before buying.   Just wonder if they will have pre-paid cards to buy.  Something like the PSN or the Xbox live money cards.   All so like the idea if you need more space you can to store game you can plug in an external hard drive.   Will be keeping a close eye on this product.
